Theoretical models are constructed corresponding to initial phases in the thermal-gravitational collapse of spherical clouds out of the interstellar gas. It is demonstrated that (a) the thermodynamics of interstellar matter is probably the most important single factor influencing the early stages of star formation, and (b) self-gravitating, primary condensations of upper main sequence stellar mass can form out of the medium directly, without the occurrence of fragmentation.
