The problem of the analysis of observations of solar limb darkening is examined and it is concluded that deficiencies in observational data always compel the adoption of an auxiliary physical hypothesis. A possible hypothesis is discussed and its consequences shown to be in agreement with observations of limb darkening and Fraunhofer line variation across the solar disk. The line strength variations to be expected in the infra-red on the basis of the foregoing analysis are computed. It is expected that line strengthening to the limb will be a relatively common phenomenon in this spectral region.
