Investigation by spacecraft of several parts of the solar system has revealed a diverse variety of plasma processes, ranging from the relatively steady state conditions in the solar wind to the explosive release of large amounts of energy observed to occur in solar flares, and to the dynamic processes taking place within the magnetospheres of the Earth and planets. The magnetospheres represent the most accessible medium for in situ observations among all plasma environments within the solar system. The intrinsic value of studying planetary magnetospheres however is not their accessibility, but the fact that they represent the basic link between small-scale laboratory plasma physics and large-scale astrophysical plasmas; thus the study of magnetospheres is not only of fundamental importance in its own right, but offers the best hope as a testing ground for our models and theories which can then be applied to remote astrophysical objects, where our only source of information is the x-ray, radio, UV, ?-ray, and IR signatures.
