Conformal anomalies are re-examined in the light of their possible applications to the Hawking effect, to gravitational instantons, to asymptotic freedom and Weinberg's “asymptotic safety” programme. A general formula is derived which relates the numerical coefficients appearing in the anomalous trace of the stress tensor.
