The crater outline, generally defined by the crater lip crest, is dependent upon the induration and precratering fracture pattern of the medium. A layer of unconsolidated material overlaying the rigid indurated material can conceal the apparent influence of the fracture pattern where this cover is thick relative to the crater depth. Where the crater outline is circular to subcircular, the cratered medium was essentially unconsolidated or unfractured at the time the crater was formed.
